Hi, I'm Simon. I've been writing software of various kinds for over 25 years, especially in medical devices. I love peeking under the hood of all kinds of things and trying my hand at making things for my personal projects.
I also play clarinet in a wind symphony, and orchestra. I compose music for fun, and experiment with generative music and prototyping silly video games.

Practice!: The Art of Making Good Mistakes is a book about making things. It will help you make things you’ve never made before despite making mistakes.
Unlike other books on ways of making things, Practice! takes a broader view of making things, avoids impenetrable jargon, and shows how diverse domains are linked.
Buy PracticeImagine a maze that covers 192 pages of a book. A maze that is so hard, it might be impossible for you to solve.
The Hardest Maze will test your skills and your sanity. After some simple warmups, The Hardest Maze is a single maze that connects each page to other pages.
The Hardest Maze is not for the faint of heart. Are you brave enough to enter?

I've red hundreds of books on management, leadership, quality etc. This the first I've ever red that calls out, acknowledges, and addresses the reality of mistakes. I've known Simon for years as a world class biomedical engineer, I was intrigued that someone like him would think to write about mistakes.
It's really a delightful read. I kept highlighting passages (I read on Kindle) and planning posts of my own around the quotes. More than once I chuckled as a quote reminded me of a time of experience, or resonated with me as being oh so true, and oh so rare.
In my early years I had a boss who said we weren't trying hard enough unless at least three out of ten things were wrong. He also held me to account learning to recover. A book like Simon's would have been very useful back then!
I highly recommend this book to anyone starting out, and also us older heads who need reminding occasionally to give ourselves and others a break.
Oh, and I read the whole book. I you're short of time, learn the definitions of Practice and Practice in the first two chapters and then move on to the good stuff.
Do yourself a favour, this one is worth it.

Before diving into the "Hardest Maze", I considered myself a reasonably sane individual with a healthy appreciation for puzzles. Oh, how naive I was!
Parker's maze is not just a puzzle; it's an epic journey through twists, turns, and mind-bending paths that make you question your very existence.
Yet, it's so much fun that I'm getting copies for all my friends, just to watch their sanity slip away in this maze.
